Professor Keith W. Hipel from the University of Waterloo on Monday, addressed an academic lecture on Expanding Cooperation with China in Environmental Science and System EngineeringatSchool of Managementon15^thof April, 2019. Dean of school of Management ProfJianguo Duwas in attendance. Thelecturewas held in the Sanjiang building room 1501 from 4.00 to 5.30pm.

Prof.Hipelindicated that the objective for the lecture was to put into perspective hisresearch in Environmental Science and Systems Engineering. Much of Prof. Hipel’s work was carried out with Chinese scholars which is an opportunity for expanding cooperation with China.

Major scientific contributions of Prof. Hipel discussed during the lecture were:

- Water Resources Management and Environmetrics

- Multi criteria decision analysis

- Environmental system engineering

- Graph model for conflict resolution

- System of System (SOS) Engineering

- Energy and sustainable development

- Expert panel on energy use and climate

Prof Hipel pointed out that large scale System of Systems (SoS) Engineering possess great complexity, deep uncertainty, a diversity of agents, conflicting values, interconnections and emergent behavior.

In addition, the speaker iterated that there is an ongoing interdependent problem of climate, energy shortages, food crises, over population, lack of fresh water, economic instability, widespread pollution and regional wars.

To solve complex problems within an SoS framework, Prof. Hipel concluded that there is the need to use integrative and adaptive governance in a participatory and interdisciplinary fashion.
